NEWBURGH - A Walden man was arrested after allegedly fleeing from police twice during a pursuit that crossed the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge, State Police said.
The pursuit unfolded last Thursday, when troopers assigned to State Police's Montgomery barracks first attempted to stop a 2005 Toyota traveling eastbound on Interstate 84 in the town of Montgomery at a high rate of speed, police said in a news release.
A trooper activated their vehicle's emergency lights and attempted to stop the Toyota, but the vehicle failed to comply, police said. A pursuit followed and continued into the city of Newburgh before troopers pulled away.
A short time later, officers from the Town of Newburgh Police Department spotted the Toyota and attempted to stop it. The driver again failed to comply, resulting in a second pursuit, police said.
The second pursuit crossed the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge into the town of Fishkill before traveling back across the bridge into the town of Newburgh. It ultimately ended on Pierces Road in the city of Newburgh, according to police.
Town of Newburgh officers arrested the driver, identified as Joseph Fleischer, 50, of Walden. He was charged with four counts of reckless endangerment, two counts of bail jumping, four counts of unlawful fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle, and multiple Vehicle and Traffic Law violations.
Fleischer was arraigned Friday in the Newburgh Town Court and remanded to the Orange County jail without bail, police said. He will remain in the jail pending a future court date.
